Civil War-era William Hall & Son Field Drum Presented to Priv. John Stephenson by Officers of the 48th NY Infantry

14" high x 16.5" diameter. Civil War-era field drum manufactured by William Hall & Son and presented to a Mr. John Stephenson by the officers of the 48th New York State Volunteers. Item features an interior William Hall & Son label with Broadway, NY address, and a silver shield escutcheon to exterior that is engraved: Presented/to/Mr. John Stephenson/by the Officers of the 48th N.Y.S.Vol./as a Testimonial of/Esteem & for Faithful Services/Sept. 1865. Includes a pair of Charles J. Soistman drumsticks.
According to CivilWarData.com, Mr. John Stephenson is most likely Private John Stephenson. Stephenson enlisted as a private and was transferred into Co. B of the 48th New York Infantry on January 30, 1864. He re-enlisted February 9, 1864 and was mustered out on September 1, 1865 at Raleigh, NC. He was promoted to principal musician at some point during his service.
