Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 8 occupational photographs, incl. firefighters and police officers.

Highlights include:

3 3/8 x 2 1/8 in. tintype housed in paper sleeve/mat, showing 2 firefighters, each with helmet in hand. The two young men represent Hose Co. 1, as indicated by the "1" that each wears on their shirt and the "1" on each helmet. They each wear a belt with the numbers " 1865" (surface abrasions including few near lower left corner as well as edges). -- Cabinet card of a young man, possibly a lawman, wearing a badge on his coat and holding what appears to be a nightstick. He holds a revolver in his hand, and a shoulder holster can be seen on the chair in front of him. Photographer unknown (toning, some soiling, top edges of print slightly trimmed and mount corners trimmed). -- Cabinet card of a police officer standing in a studio, wearing a badge on his coat, with what appears to be the handle of an edged weapon tucked in his belt. Muskegon, MI: William Lord (?). -- Cabinet card showing a group of three men, one likely a police officer, forcefully holding a woman down in a chair. New Haven, CT: F.A. Bowman (staining, edge wear/loss to mount). -- Cabinet card, studio view of three men, the one at center with a cigarette in hone hand, the other placed on a pistol tucked in a holster. He is flanked by two men who appear to be his "assistants." Fosston, MN: A.H. Indrelee.

[With:] Cabinet card of a group of five rough-and-tumble characters, three of which smoke pipes. The subject at top right displays a horseshoe, suggesting that this could be a group of blacksmiths. George, IA: J.C. Kuhn (significant wear and soiling, corner loss to mount). -- Photograph of four men playing cards, manuscript identification on verso identifying the scene as "Vermillion Mine, May 18, 1899, A.J. Bayman on left." Photographer unknown (multiple tape repairs to fully separated left edge of mount). -- Informal photograph of an interesting group of men and women in an interior setting. Photographer unknown.

Together, 8 photographs. Condition generally good unless otherwise noted, with toning, occasional soiling, edge and corner wear to mounts.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
