Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 8 modern daguerreotypes incl. portrait of Charles TREMEAR (1866-1943), 1934.
Ninth plate possible self-portrait of Charles H. TREMEAR, with his characteristic wavy white hair and mustache, wearing a suit and tie. (Tarnishing and spotting, few other imperfections; sealed in brown paper.) Housed in a figural Union case (some nicking/chipping, white residue). Brown paper backing with pencil inscription: "C. H. Tremear / Jan 24 - 1934." -- Sixth plate daguerreotype portrait of a young man with short hair wearing a suit and tie. (Tarnishing to edges, spotting, dust particles throughout; partly sealed with black tape.) Housed in a leatherette case. Although unidentified, the subject may be Ray Phillips, one of Charles Tremear's students, who went on to take daguerreotypes in California and was a pioneer collector. -- Quarter plate outdoor portrait of George Gilbert, the first president of the Photo Historical Society of New York by Harvey S. ZUCKER, Copake Falls, NY, 1972. Gilbert holds a top hat and wears large square-framed glasses. (Heavy tarnishing to edges and to central spot near subject's head, scratching, rubbing, and other imperfections throughout plate; sealed.) Verso etched with subject, maker, and date of creation. -- Quarter plate outdoor view of an area on campus at Appalachian State University in North Carolina by Dr. Joseph T. Pollock, who taught at that University. (Chemical deterioration, weeping, spotting throughout; sealed with light blue tape.) Housed in a modern metal frame. Seals with ink inscription detailing subject, seal date (1994), and signed by Pollock. -- And 4 others, including a stereodaguerreotype of an outdoor tree scene and a quarter plate daguerreotype of a New York City village, once belonging to Harvey Zucker. -- Together, 8 daguerreotypes made in the 20th and (possibly) 21st centuries.
