Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 13 pairs of daguerreotypes featuring the same subjects, some likely copies.
A pair of half plate portraits of the same bearded gentleman by different artists, S. Root and G.S. Rugg. (Rugg portrait with heavy clouding and chemical deterioration, haloing, and other imperfections; Root image with tarnishing and heavy spotting, oxidation to mat.) Root image housed in a fully separated leatherette case. Rugg image without case. -- A pair of sixth plate portraits of a young girl, likely an original and a copy, by the Williamson Bros, Brooklyn, NY. The original image features only tinting to the girl's cheeks, she sits on a miniature chair and wears an off-the-shoulder dress (tarnishing to edges, spotting; unsealed). The copy, a mirror image of the first, features light blue tinting to the girl's dress (softer focus, spotting, heavy oxidation to mat; partially resealed.) Both housed in leatherette push-button cases embossed with "Williamson Bros." -- A pair of sixth plate portraits of a woman seated at a table, wearing lace gloves, likely an original and a copy, by Appleby. The woman appears to hold something in her lap with one hand, as she sits in an ornate wooden studio chair and looks pensively just off-camera. (Some spotting, clouding, scratching, and tarnishing to both images; unsealed.) Both housed together in a leatherette case. The copy, a mirror image of the original, is housed under a mat stamped for Appleby. -- And 10 other pairs of daguerreotypes featuring the same subject, some being copies. Conditions and housings vary. -- Together, 26 daguerreotypes made up of pairs of images featuring the same subject.
