Lot Description
[CIVIL WAR] SCHOLTEN, J.A. Salted paper print of 3 cavalrymen with revolvers & sabers. St. Louis.
6 x 8 in. photograph, which appears to be a salted paper print, on 8 x 10 in. cardstock mount with John A. Scholten's imprint at lower left (toning, soiling, edge and corner wear to mount). The studio portrait shows three US cavalrymen in uniform, each armed with a saber and revolver. The subject at right wears corduroy issue trousers and brogans, and the other two wear real mounted services trousers and boots with spurs. Two of the three troopers wear the "tongue and wreath" belt plate, which was used by militias and earlier units.
Early Photography Collection of Jules Martino, Silverton, Oregon
