Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR - GETTYSBURG]. CDV of General John Henry Hobart Ward, KIA at Gettysburg. New York: Anthony, ca 1861-1862.

CDV on cardstock mount (excellent quality, minimal spotting and residue, possible clipping to print edges ; mount with soiling and clipping to edges). Verso bears Anthony's imprint, with negative credit to Brady. Ward appears seated in a colonel's uniform.

John H. Hobart Ward (1823-1903) joined the US Army in 1842, serving during the Mexican-American War, and left the army to serve as the commissary general of New York. At the onset of the Civil War, Ward rejoined the army and was commissioned colonel of the 38th New York Infantry Regiment, serving as a temporary brigade commander in the III Corps during the Second Battle of Manassas. Ward was promoted to brigadier general in October 1862 and led the 2nd Brigade in Birney's 1st Division at Gettysburg where he was wounded. Despite unquestioned "bravery and ability" Ward was relieved in the summer of 1864 after an incident of drunkenness during the battle of the Wilderness and forced from the army.
