Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR - GETTYSBURG]. CDV of General Gabriel Paul, blinded at Gettysburg.

Postwar albumen print on cardstock mount (toning, some wrinkling to print; mount with minor spotting). Uncredited. Paul appears turned to the side, making his brigadier general shoulder strap and damaged eye visible to the viewer.

A career regular army officer and graduate of the United States Military Academy (1834), Gabriel R. Paul (1813-1886) entered the Civil War as a major of the 8th Infantry, US. Most notably, on the first day of fighting at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863, Paul was shot in the head and blinded in both eyes while riding in the rear of one of his regiments, the 104th New York, during the defense of Oak Ridge. He survived the war and later served at an administrative post until the close of the war.
