Lot Description
[MILES, Nelson A. (1839-1925)]. Large format albumen portrait of Miles as major general of the US Army. Washington, DC: M.B. Brady & Co., 1865.
8 x 6 1/8 in. albumen photograph on original cardstock mount, 11 x 9 in. (some toning, spotting, and staining to print and mount, including stain near right edge of print and mount, crease/partial separation near lower left corner of mount, edge and corner wear). M.B. Brady & Co., Washington, DC, imprint on mount below image. A scarce war-date, large format photograph of General Miles.
Nelson A. Miles' lengthy military career spanned the Civil War through the Spanish-American War. He served as the last Commanding General of the United States Army prior to the abolition of the office but was forced to retire in 1903 due to the Army's mandatory retirement age. Notably, Miles received the Medal of Honor for gallantry during the Battle of Chancellorsville.
