Lot Description

[FLAGS]. 31-star American parade flag. Ca 1850-1859.

22 x 36 1/2 in. cotton flag with 31 printed stars, configured in a double medallion surrounding a much larger central star, that is haloed in both blue and white, all flanked by medium sized corner stars. The fly consists of 13 printed stripes (toning, light soiling and staining throughout, fold lines with few minor areas of separation near folds, some fraying to edges, few small pinholes near hoist end). This rarely encountered flag commemorates the State of California, and was used from 1850 to 1859.
