Lot Description

[CIVIL RIGHTS]. A group of 3 press photographs documenting Freedom Riders in Jackson, MS, and Albany, GA. May-December 1961.


3 silver gelatin photographs ranging in size from 5 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. to 8 x 8 in. (light toning, edge/corner wear to each, some cropped). All with cropping notes, some retouched. Ink stamps and newspaper clippings on verso.

Scenes/captions include: "Policeman searches for weapons after arresting Freedom Rider in the white waiting room of bus station at Jackson, Miss., yesterday," 29 May 1961. -- "'Freedom Riders' ordered to 'move on' in Jackson, Miss...when they refused nine were ordered arrested by police Capt. J.L. Ray," 29 May 1961. -- "Off to Jail...A policeman held two youths by the coat as he led them to jail after they sat down with several others at the lunch counter in a bus station as Freedom Rider demonstrations continued," 15 December 1961.
