Lot Description

[SPANISH AMERICAN WAR]. Spanish American War-period bamboo canteen with folk art decoration. Ca late 19th century.


Canteen made from a bamboo section, approx. 21 in. long (including extensions), 4 1/2 in. diameter (surface wear consistent with age and use). Obverse inscribed with an American eagle perched atop a patriotic shield that is presented beside an American flag, with a "Holy Bible" open below. Depictions of a spider, lizard, and caterpillar are also included. The reverse side of the canteen is inscribed with a list of dates ranging from 26 April -28 August 1898 and locations, presumably the places where the owner of the canteen was stationed during the Spanish American War. Locations include: Moline, IL, Camp Tanner, IL, Camp Alger, VA, Charleston, SC, USS Rita, and multiple locations in Cuba and Puerto Rico, including Santiago, Siboney, Guantanamo Bay, Yauco, Ponce, Adjuntas, Utuado.
