Lot Description
The ebonized vertical soundboard with a scrolled top, the conforming cover panel lined with red pattern silk and gold silk swags and applied gilt metal mounts, the covered six keyboard back panel bearing inscribed label 'Martin Seuffert/ Wienn'; the keyboard supported on Egyptian terms, the footboard cover also silk lined with an ebonized lozenge panel applied with gilt metal sunburst and fleur di lys; the soundboard bearing label 'Priv./ Clavier=Instrumenten=Fabrik/ des/ Martin Seuffert/ ...auf der alten Wieden in der (Al)leegasse, Mithaus =/ Nro. 75 u. 76, Stiege Nro. 3 um/ (er)sten (sto)ck rechts'; also with ink inscription to interior 'A.& M. Ducci/ No. 1731'; six octaves, FF-f4. NOTE: Martin Seuffert (1772-1847) was the son and grandson of organ builders. In 1802 he was one of the founders of 'Wachtl & Co.' which developed the upright grand piano which due to it's unique form was given the name 'Giraffe piano'. In 1827 he went into business with John Seidler and traded under the name 'Seuffert & Seidler', eventually adding his son Eduard, also a piano maker, to the firm.
