The chair frame carved in full relief as a seated human skeleton with a drop in cushion seat, on the extended rockers applied with carved fantastical beasts.
NOTE: Armchairs of this type were known to have been produced in 19th century Russia although the present lot's configuration as a rocking chair is more unusual and appears not to be an alteration of the original form. See Christopher Payne's '19th Century European Furniture', p. 484, pl. 1423 for a similar armchair example.
