Lot Description
Four Silhouette Portraits
Maryland, Circa 1820
comprising three cut-paper and velvet-mounted examples depicting members of the same family, each with inscribed identification and locks of hair, and one full-length watercolor example of a standing gentleman.
11 x 9 inches (largest).
Ink inscriptions identify the family members as George Kolb, his portrait with watercolor embellishment; Elizabeth Ownings; and Ann Kolb. Genealogical records confirm that Elizabeth Daugherty Kolb was born on February 4, 1798, to George and Ann Winnull Kolb (1776-1854) in Frederick, Maryland. She was christened at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Middletown and married Joseph Augustus Ownings (1806-1862) in Baltimore. Elizabeth died on August 8, 1841.
