Lot Description

Two Military Related Porcelain Shaving Mugs, One Belonging to William Verbeck
Late 19th/Early 20th Century

comprising a presentation mug identified Wm. Verbeck, the President of St. John's Military Academy in 1896, with inscribed dedication Compliments of C.A. Kruger to underside, and a veteran's mug identified M. Hartman and stamped VxD Austria to underside.
Height of each 3 7/8 inches.

St. John's Military Academy, now the Manlius School, was founded in 1869 by the Episcopal Bishop of New York in DeWitt, New York. William Verbeck (1861-1930), a Dutch-American educator and soldier in the Fifth California Infantry, served as the school's president from 1888 until 1910, when he was appointed New York State Adjutant General. He also commanded the New York National Guard and was ultimately given the rank of Brigadier General.
