Lot Description
An Ice Deliveryman's Porcelain Occupational Shaving Mug
Late 19th/Early 20th Century
identified D.B. Gassler and depicting two men in a horse-drawn delivery wagon lettered Lake Conewago Ice.
marked D&Co. on underside.
Height 3 1/2 inches.
The Lake Connewago Ice Company was established in 1889 in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Details of the firm's activities were frequently published in various local newspapers throughout the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including a report from 1913, wherein a "superintendent Herman," in the company of 60 employees, "completed the filling of the ice house at Lake Conewago, Mt Gretna...12,000 tons of ice, eight inches thick, were obtained, and all as clear as crystal." (The Lebanon Daily News, January 13, 1913, p. 4).
