Lot Description
A William H. Rambo Albany Slip-Glazed and Incised Jug
Swan Township, Vinton County, Ohio, Circa 1898
with dedication to Rambo's son, Grover C. Rambo, Stella, O., date, and floral decoration to body.
Height 4 inches.
Potter William Rambo (1840-1911) moved to Vinton County after the death of his first wife in 1880. He married Vinton County native Jane "Jennie" C. Wharton (1853-1928), with whom he had one son, Grover Cleveland Rambo, in 1886. The couple appears to have separated by 1896, and Jennie and Grover moved in with Jennie's mother in Stella, Jackson Township. William Rambo seemingly maintained a relationship with his son, and this jug was likely made as a gift for Grover, possibly on the occasion of his twelfth birthday. Grover worked as a farmer for most of his life before transitioning to more skilled craftsmanship as a watch and clock repairman. He died in Jackson Township in 1956.
Property from the Robert and Nancy Treichler Collection of Ohio Stoneware and Americana, Tallmadge, Ohio
