Lot Description

A Ten-Gallon Stoneware Keg with Floral Basket Decoration
Atwater, Ohio, 19th Century

with tooled body and brushed decoration and capacity marks.
Overall height 22 1/4 inches; height of stoneware 21 inches.

The handling of these flowers, though depicted in a basket as opposed to the more traditional cornucopia presentation, closely resembles that found on known examples identified to the Gelheart family of pottery craftsmen from Atwater, Ohio. The Gelhearts arrived in Ohio by 1856 and were recorded as “turners” [of pottery] in census records beginning in 1870.

Property from the Robert and Nancy Treichler Collection of Ohio Stoneware and Americana, Tallmadge, Ohio
