Lot Description

Highly Important Japanese Imperial presentation cloisonne box attributed to ando workshop, early 20th century

Of rectangular form, the center enameled to show an eighteen leaf white chrysanthemum worked in gold wire, framed by a profusion of oak leaves worked in silver wire over a wireless ground of light brown enamel, the interior counter enamel is of a solid and thick tan or light brown, good silver mounts, moderate loss to corner edge, together with original letter dated July 13, 1921, from the Imperial Japanese Embassy, Washington stating that ' it is my agreeable duty to inform you that the Empress of Japan has been pleased to present to you a cloisonne box with Imperial Chest of the chrysanthemum, in happy memory of your sojourn in Tokyo....among all the members of the diplomatic corps in Tokyo, non has been held in greater esteem and affection by the Japanese people than you and Mr. Morris'.
