Lot Description
A Mailman's Porcelain Occupational Shaving Mug
Early 20th Century
bearing the name R. Oglesby on the face of a postcard.
card dated Dec. 25, 1916 with postmark of Chester, PA, and features a hand-painted Thomas Jefferson 1-cent stamp.
underside marked T&V Limoges France and with further marks for G.B.S.Co.
Height 3 3/4 inches.
Robert Phillip Oglesby was born on December 25, 1883, in Chester, Pennsylvania to Phillip Powell and Elizabeth Oglesby. He married Helen "Nellie" Cullen in 1905 and was working as a stone cutter at a marble yard by 1910. The U.S. Federal Census of 1920 reports that Oglesby had fathered two children and was working as a clerk at the local post office. He and Nellie went on to have two more children before his death on November 29, 1946.
