The John Hancock Life Insurance Company was established in Boston in 1862. The company's name lacked standardization through the early twentieth century and was variably recorded as either the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company or the John Hancock Life Insurance Company through the 1940s. Early on, the firm was housed in Boston's first iteration of the John Hancock Building on Devonshire Street, where it was erected in 1891 based on designs by renowned American architect William G. Preston. The building was purchased by another bank in 1919 and demolished in 1922.

Property from the Collection of James Carpenter, Montague, New Jersey
