Lot Description

Early London Colt 1851 Navy Revolver

.36 caliber. 7.5" octagonal barrel. SN: 1838 (mfg. ca.1853). Blued and color casehardened finish, silver plated brass backstrap and triggerguard, one-piece walnut grip. Single action percussion revolver with six chambered smooth round cylinder. Barrel roll-marked in a single line: - ADDRESS COL COLT LONDON -. Lower left side of frame marked COLT'S/PATENT. Left barrel web with London commercial proof marks, which are also present between the cylinder chambers. Barrel web marked "2" between the wedge and the cylinder. Matching numbers throughout, including the grip, with the exception of the unnumbered wedge. Rear sight is a notch in the hammer nose, with a brass cone shaped front sight. Cylinder with much of the Texas and Mexican naval battle scene and somewhat weak COLT'S PATENT No mark, followed by the serial number. Traces of the "Engaged 16 May 1843" markings are present on the front edge of the cylinder, with no legible Ormsby signature line. This first year of "production" London Navy was assembled from Hartford parts, as evidenced by the brass triggerguard and backstrap, which would be iron on the guns actually manufactured in London. A nice crisp early London Navy.
