Lot Description
[ARCHITECTURE]. HALFPENNY, William and John. Chinese and Gothic Architecture Properly Ornamented. London: Robert Sayer, 1752.
Quarto. 12 copper-engraved plates. (Some light spotting and mostly marginal soiling.) 18th-century drab wrappers (disbound, spine perished, chipping and soiling); cloth folding case.
FIRST EDITION. William Halfpenny was an English Architect and Builder, and a prolific author of pattern books in the 18th century, which he occasionally wrote with his son John. Halfpenny's books were often the source for design details in 18th-century American houses as well, including Mount Clare in Baltimore County, Maryland, and the Chase–Lloyd House in Annapolis, Maryland. RARE: We trace no copies of this work at auction since 1981.
