Queen of the Seas was built in East Boston by Paul Curtis and was owned by Glidden & Williams of Boston, Massachusetts. Captained by Elias D. Knight for her maiden voyage, she joined the "Deep Sea Derby" in the fall of 1852, a race of the finest clipper ships of the day from Boston and New York around Cape Horn to San Francisco. Queen of the Seas set sail from Boston on November 3, 1852, and arrived in San Francisco on March 11, 1853.
