Lot Description
Antonio Jacobsen (American, 1850-1921)
Great Lakes Bulk Freighter Myron C. Taylor
1918
oil on board
signed, dated, and inscribed Antonio Jacobsen 1918 / 31 Palisade Av. West Hoboken NJ, lower right
ship identified, port bow
16 x 36 inches.
The Myron C. Taylor was built in River Rouge, Michigan by the Great Lakes Engineering Works. She launched June 15, 1929 and enrolled as part of the Pittsburgh Steamship Co., with a home port in Duluth, Minnesota. In 1967, she was transferred to the United States Steel Great Lakes Fleet, Wilmington, Delaware and depowered for diesel the following year and later renamed Calumet. After sustaining irreparable damage while unloading limestone in Cleveland, Ohio, the Myron C. Taylor was sold for scrap in 2007. Given the timeline, it is possible that the painting was commissioned for the eponymous New York industrialist and diplomat Myron Charles Taylor (1874-1959), rather than as a portrait of the Great Lakes vessel.
