Lot Description
Paul Howard Manship (American, 1885-1966)
The Javelin Thrower
patinated bronze
signed and dated PAUL MANSHIP 1921, No. 14, base
foundry stamp of Roman Bronze Works N.Y., bottom tier of base on back side
Height 20 x width 33 x depth 7 3/4 inches.
Although many sources, including Edwin Murtha's Paul Manship (New York: The Macmillan Company, 1957), suggest that Manship created an original run of twelve casts of this work, the Collection of the Maryland State Archives holds a version of the Spear Thrower editioned No. 13 to the base. This cast was acquired by the museum in 1923, either directly from Manship or a gallery, indicating that more than twelve sculptures were initially cast.
