Lot Description
Molded and polychromed porcelain ice pitcher designed by karl l.h. mueller, signed "union porcelain works greenpoint, n.y."
The "Uncle Sam" pitcher, molded with walrus spout and polar bear handle on ovoid body, molded with relief figures of King Gambrinus, the Norse God of beer, offering a drink to Brother Jonathan, a character from The Contrast by Royall Tyler, who eventually began to symbolize Uncle Sam. Between the King and Jonathan, a goat and a keg inscribed with the initials "U.P.W.; " The obverse with a fight scene between Bill Nye and Chinese Gambler, AH Sin.
