Lot 743
Lot Description
5 ft. 7 in. x 3 ft. 8 in. Perepedil note: There are two published examples of Perepedil double niche prayer rugs. One dates from the early 19th century, measures 7 ft. 7 in. x 3 ft. 6 in., and has cotton wefts and wool warps (Sotheby’s New York, sale of December 11, 1991, lot 11) and the other dates from circa 1870, measures 7 ft. 4 in. x 3 ft. 2 in., and has wool wefts and warps (Hali 58, p. 79). (Each is also published in Ralph Kaffel, Caucasian Prayer Rugs, London, 1998, plates 49 and 50, respectively, pp. 100-101 illustrated). The fields in those rugs contain seven shaped ‘ram’s horn’ motifs (also suggested to represent ‘calycinal blossoms’) (Kaffel, op.cit., p. 98, also citing Christine Klose, The Perepedil Enigma, Hali 55, February 1991, pp. 110-117) - three in the center of the field flanked by two pairs of horns/blossoms. Woven on cotton wefts and wool warps, the present rug is smaller and more squarish in size than the other two Perepedils. The borders in the present rug are nearly identical to the single niche Perepedil prayer rug in Eberhart Hermann, Seltene Orientteppiche VI, Munich, 1984, plate 39, pp. 108 illustrated (also featured on the cover of Hali op.cit.) The design of the present rug differs from the designs of the other two rugs because it contains two, rather than three horns/blossoms in the center of the field, and they are very elongated, nearly touching the major border. Additionally, the present rug contains an incomplete third pair of horns/blossoms, in addition to the two pairs of horns/blossoms in the field that flank the elongated horns/blossoms. Finally, the present rug, unlike the other two, has four additional horns/blossoms – one in each corner of the field, outside the mihrabs. .
