Lot Description

Aesthetic Movement carved oak settee Attributed to Allen and Brother, Philadelphia (1870-1875)

The molded crestrail centering figure of an owl within a leafy surround above a coffered and upholstered back, enclosed by incised stiles with squared urn form finials, the square-section arms carved with flowerheads at handholds are supported by ring-turned spindles, the carved and flutted legs joined by palmette and flower head carved seat rail, fan and line carved brackets, turned feet. Old oilcloth upholstery. The back bears printed label of upholsterer, "Alex Milne 511 Ninth Street, Northwest Washington, D.C. Fine Furniture and Decorations."
