Lot Description

Large collection of plaster intaglios and gems mainly 19th century, retailed by john tyrrell

Depicting Neoclassical and mythical scenes, approximately 245 pieces. NOTE: In 1839 Christie's London offered a collection of approximately 2500 gems in the Neoclassical style commissioned by Prince Stanislas Poniatowski (1754-1833), the nephew of the last King of Poland, after going into exile in Italy in 1791. Once it was discovered that the gems were not ancient, the sale was disappointing. John Tyrrell acquired over 1000 intaglios from the collection and had numerous plaster casts made. Tyrrell published his collection in 1841. The catalogue was printed again in 1857. .
