Holley, Mary Austin. Texas. Lexington, Ky.: J. Clarke & Co., 1836. First edition thus. 12mo, orig. blue cloth, gilt-lettered spine, recased, new endpapers. Fold. map; 1 inch close tear just extending into body of map from center right margin - negligible paper loss - light offsetting. Light to occasionally moderate foxing to title page & text, old, small ink stain in gutters of pp. 137-154 - not obscuring text.
The author was Stephen F. Austin's cousin. The first edition of 1833 - the earliest book on Texas in the English language - was written to promote emigration; that of 1836, re-written, was essentially a different work seeking to encourage United States recognition.
