Lot Description

Important Minton pate-sur-pate Exhibition vase, by Louis Solon circa 1876

Of classical form, finely painted and hand tooled in white slip with a classical maiden releasing cupid, against a chocolate brown gilt enriched ground, printed gold globe English and American flag mark, bears partial Centennial Exhibition label. Footnote: The companion piece to this vase was purchased by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, with museum funds from A. B. Daniells stand at the 1876 Centennial exhibition. Images of the vases were in Prof. Walter Smith's 'Masterpieces of the Centennial International Exhibition', Vol. II, page 90. They were described in this publication as "beautiful Greek Vases, modeled after well known specimens in the British Museum, and decorated by the celebrated artist M. SOLON, formerly of Sèvres, but now in the employ of the Messrs. Minton of England. A sketch of the vase being offered for sale can be seen in Solon's notebook of 1875, where he records the name as L'Echange.
