Whitehead's alternate history novel tells the story of Cora, who is enslaved in the Antebellum South in the 19th century, who follows the Underground Railroad to gain her freedom from her Georgia plantation. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the National Book Award for Fiction, the Arthur C. Clarke Award, and the 2017 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence.
