Lot Description

Pair of French Empire gilt bronze mounted vases and covers 19th century

The green marble bodies of tapering ovoid form mounted with a procession of classically draped maidens, flanked by rams' heads, supported by two winged putti, raised on stepped oblong plinth bases centered by eagle and wreath mounts, on toupie feet, now fitted as lamps. Footnote: Two pairs of similar vases have been sold by Christie's London, The Champalimaud Collection, 6th Jul 2005, lot 195 and Park West the Property of a Private Collector, 22nd May 2003, lot 72. Both make reference to a near identical pair in the Palace of Pavlovsk, and it is possible that these vases were copies produced in France for the Russian market.

H: 14 1/4, H: 28 in. (including fittings).
