[EARLY PHOTOGRAHY]. 3 images of Miss Kate M. Boggs, first Lutheran foreign female missionary.
CDV bust portrait of a young Kate M. Boggs on cardstock mount (toning to image, mount with soiling and light wear to corners). New Concord, OH: T. J. Erwin, n.d. Verso with studio imprint. -- Cabinet card vignetted bust portrait of a middle-aged Boggs (soiling/discoloration to image and mount, surface wear throughout). Delaware, OH: Bo Durtha, n.d. Mount recto with Durtha's gilt imprint. -- Cabinet card group portrait of the Reverend Charles Schnure, Miss Kate M. Boggs, and Mrs. May Schnure, on cardstock mount (thin cardstock, few surface abrasions, good tonality, mount with discoloration and wear). N.p., n.d. Mount recto with printed identification of subjects. Verso with signed inscription from Boggs: "For Mattie Pader[?] with Christian love from India. Kate M. Boggs." Verso also bears printed statement, in part, "Sold for the benefit of the Foreign Missionary Work of the Lutheran Church."
Kate M. Boggs became the first female missionary sent abroad by the American Lutheran Church in 1880 when she travelled to India as the church was supporting 6 girls' schools there. She fell ill while in India and languished in Bangalore before returning after 2 years. She moved to Zanesville, OH to live with her mother while recuperating.
