Lot Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. SANDER, August (1876-1964), photog. Cabinet photograph of a young man. 


4 x 5 3/4 in. photograph on original cardstock mount with imprint of "Aug Sander, Photr. Kunst-Anstalt, Linz-Landstr 59-61." Additional studio information printed on mount verso. A portrait of a young man seated. 

A rare studio portrait produced during the early years of August Sander's professional and artistic career. After travelling as a photographic apprentice to Berlin, Magdeburg, Halle, Leipzig and Dresden, Sander worked in the Greif photographic studio in Linz in 1901. Together with Franz Stukenberg he took over the Greif photographic studio in 1902. The rewards referenced on the mount verso include a 1904 date indicating that this image was created around that time.
