[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Advertising CDV for American inventor Elias Howe Jr.
CDV on cardstock mount (toning, light surface soiling/spotting, light wear to mount edges and corners).
A vignetted bust portrait of Howe is encircled by text reading "Elias Howe, Jr. / Maker and Inventor New York, U.S.A."
Penciled inscription to mount recto reads, "A.A. Mumford Agent."
Elias Howe Jr. (1819-1867) is best remembered for his invention of the modern lockstitch sewing machine, for which he was awarded a patent in 1846. He also served in the 17th Connecticut Infantry Regiment during the Civil War, performing duties as regimental postmaster.
