Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. Large collection of shaving utensils and personal items.

Approx. 6 1/2 in. (closed) straight razor with wooden handle (field repair to handle near blade including visible piece of brass with added reinforcing pins). Housed in a 10 1/4 in. box strop. Tang stamped "Kingman & Hassan / Boston" on one side and "Made for the Army" on the other.

Kingman & Hassam are listed as cutlers in the Boston city directories from 1855 through 1860. Thereafter the listing name changes to Hassam Bros.

The visible piece of brass is not merely an exposed bolster. It is a “made from scratch” refinement, to which additional reinforcing pins have been added.

[With:] Tin shaving cup with side compartment; 2 straight razors with handles, housed in leather-covered wood blade case; shaving brush with wood handle and cord-wrapped bristles; and hand mirror in round stamped tin case, front with patriotic eagle motif and back with initials "BC" and "Brevete A Paris."

[With:] A small assortment of other personal items including eyeglasses, a camp cup, a "Robert Burns Segars" box, and "The Book of Nature; folk art carved ephemera, Containing Information for Young People Who Think of getting Married...." New York, 1864.

Property from the Inventory of James C. Frasca
