Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. Parody CDV of General Frémont "Crossing the Rocky Mountains."

CDV on cardstock mount (light separating from mount to lower corners of image, light wear to mount corners). Featured in albumen is a caricature of General  Frémont riding a rocking horse with text below reading, "Crossing the Rocky Mountains." The caption is likely a reference to Fremont's many expeditions to the west, on multiple occasions seeking a feasible railroad route through the Rocky Mountains. It is not exactly clear what point the cartoonist whose work is reproduced here was trying to make, but one could surmise that Frémont's expeditions were thought of as childlike or pointless.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
