Lot Description

[CIVIL WAR]. 19 albumen photographs of various Civil War battlefields, particularly Chickamauga. Ca 1880s. 


19 albumen photographs ranging in size from 7 3/4 x 4 1/2 in. to 9 3/8 x 7 1/2 in., on cardstock mounts, each with manuscript notation in an unknown hand identifying the scene on verso (toning, occasional spotting to prints; soiling, chipping, and some loss to mounts, some curved). 

6 photographs document notable locations associated with Chickamauga: "Looking S.E. toward Alexa Bridge, Tree in foreground shows charge of cannister thrown by Federals." -- "Lee & Gordon's mill (new) site of old mill." -- "The Lee house. Headquarters of Gen. T.J. Wood." -- "Site of Widow Glenn's house, Rosecrans' hdqtrs. Sep 20/63. House burned during the battle Sep. 21." -- "Sink Hole, near Widow Glenn's house." -- "Looking north from upper window of Dyer's house, over Dyer farm to Snodgrass Hill. 

5 photographs document notable locations associated with Corinth: "National Cemetery looking N.W." -- "Federal breastworks, looking S.E. from College Hill. 1/2 mile of town." -- "M. & C.R.R. cut. Ft. William earthworks on the right." -- "Looking towards Fort Robinet from a fort northeast of the town." -- "H'dqtrs. of Gen'l Dodge."

Additional views, as identified on verso, include: "House of J.W. Wofford, halfway between Dover and Fort Henry."
