Lot Description

ROOSEVELT, Theodore (1858-1919). White House card signed ("Theodore Roosevelt"), as President, Washington [DC], ca 9 March 1907.


Signature on printed card "The White House / Washington," 4 1/8 x 2 3/4 in. (pencil notation at bottom left "March 9th 1907," light soil). Accompanied by original mailing envelope postmarked 9 March 1907, 7:30PM, and addressed to Mr. W. North Robins of Syracuse, N.Y.

Theodore Roosevelt changed the name of the presidential residence from the "Executive Mansion" to "The White House" in 1901. A scarce printed White House card bearing the executive residence's new name.

Provenance: An estate sale in Bethesda, Maryland. The recipient of the signed card, William (W.) North Robins, was an engineer and is referenced in the Thomas A. Edison papers.
