Lot Description

JOHNSON, Andrew (1808-1875). Autograph note signed ("And. Johnson") granting the release of a prisoner of war. Executive Office, [Washington, DC], 11 May 1865.

2 3/4 x 3 1/8 in. (toning, light spotting and residue on verso, edges possibly trimmed). Written and signed by Andrew Johnson as President of the United States, the Civil War-period note reads in full, "Let the within named Prisoner of War be released upon taking the oath of allegiance."

Provenance: Descended directly in the family of Mary Atwood Pool (1914-2009). Washington, DC, resident Mary Atwood Pool began collecting autographs of notable American historical figures at the age of 14, with each autograph acquired by her direct communication with the historical figure, their staff, family members, or attorneys. The consignor relates that this autograph was acquired from a Washington, DC, shop, and is the only item within the collection that Ms. Pool purchased.

This lot is located in Cincinnati.
