Lot Description
[LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865)]. [HESLER, Alexander (1823-1895), photographer]. 2 photographs of Lincoln printed by King V. Hostick - Herbert George Studio. 1956.
10 1/2 x 13 1/2 in. silver gelatin photographs of Abraham Lincoln, both matted and framed, 16 x 21 in. overall (very fine condition, unexamined outside frames). Each mount bears King V. Hostick's 1956 copyright as well as the Herbert George Studio, Springfield, IL, imprint, and includes information indicating that the photographs were produced from negatives owned by King V. Hostick. Also included is a pamphlet issued by the Georgetown University Shop in Washington, DC, in which the pair of portraits are advertised and described.
The original photographs were taken by Alexander Hesler at Springfield, IL, 3 June 1860, [Ostendorf, O-26 and O-27].
[With:] BURCHETTE, R.C., photographer. 7 3/4 x 9 3/4 in. silver gelatin photograph of the Lincoln memorial, mounted and housed in 15 x 18 in. frame (some areas of slight discoloration to print).
Provenance: Descended directly in the family of Mary Atwood Pool (1914-2009). Washington, DC, resident Mary Atwood Pool began collecting autographs of notable American historical figures at the age of 14, with each autograph acquired by her direct communication with the historical figure, their staff, family members, or attorneys.
