[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. 5 sixth plate images featuring studious individuals, mostly children.


HICKOX, A., artist. Daguerreotype seated portrait of a girl with prominent front teeth, holding open a book and having several other books lying on the table next to her. She wears her hair back in braids and is adorned with a gold-highlighted necklace set. (Some tarnishing along edges and weeping effect to plate, no preserver present.) Housed in a half leatherette case. Penciled note in case behind image reads "A. Hickox Daguerrean, Montrose Pa." -- Daguerreotype portrait of a young boy seated in a wooden chair, holding a book upright on his leg with one hand and resting his elbow on the covered table next to him. (Tarnishing around edge, occasional spotting, some rubbing to image, good clarity, no preserver present; resealed.) Housed in a half leatherette case. -- Tintype portrait of a young woman holding a book open in front of her and having two large conch shells displayed on the table next to her. (Vertical abrasion to plate near left edge extends nearly the length of t entire image, other surface scratches throughout; resealed.) Housed in a Scarce floral Union case, Sea Shell 1 [Berg 2-65]. -- And 2 others, both ambrotypes. -- Together, 5 portraits of subjects with books. Conditions vary.
