Lot Description
[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Quarter plate daguerreotype displaying separate portraits of an aged man and woman executed on the same plate and covered by a double ninth plate mat.
Landscape-oriented quarter plate daguerreotype featuring an aged couple with quite a bit of space between them, as if they are separate portraits. A lacquered double ninth plate mat features two oval openings revealing each subject as if in a separate portrait. (Scratches and spots of residue to plate, with tarnishing and other chemical discoloration toward some edges; unsealed but with partial cardstock backing attached to mat with black tape.) Housed in a fully separated leatherette case (split at spine, exterior wear).
The female subject wears a pair of glasses and a bonnet. The male subject, who bears a striking resemblance to former President John Tyler, wears a pronounced collar, vest, and jacket.
Early Photography Collection of Jules Martino, Silverton, Oregon
