Lot Description

Silver- hilted Eagle Head American Revolutionary Sword hallmarked Charles Hall, lancaster pa, circa 1775

The eagle head pommel on spiral-carved bone grip, the cross guard detailed with a pig on one side and a stag attacked by a dog on the other, marked CH within a rectangle at sheath cap, with original leather scabbard. Mounted in a glass and mahogany vitrine by Tiffany & Co., New York. with a silver plaque engraved, "This sword was carried by Captain Michael Whitley, Great great grandfather of William Fahnestock. Captain Whitley, Seventh Company, Col. Robert Elder's Fourth Battalion, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania Militia was wounded and taken prisoner by the British at Chestnut Hill, Battle of Germantown, December 6th 1777. Died several days later in Philadelphia aged 47 Years. His daughter Martha married Isaac McKinley; His son Isaac C. McKinley, was father of Margaret A. McKinley, who was mother of William Fahnestock." A Fahnestock Genealogy, and a history of the Whitemarsh Action, of December 1777 in which Whitely met his death accompany sword.
