4to. 12 color-printed plates by Rackham tipped to mounts with numerous in-text illustrations. Original vellum gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut (light rubbing); custom white morocco-tipped slipcase.
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 276 of 460 copies, SIGNED BY RACKHAM. Rackham delved so deeply into the more horrific contexts of Poe's tales that he would write to a friend, "[These illustrations were] so horrible I was beginning to frighten myself."
