Lot Description
FRAZER, James George (1854-1941). The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion. London: Macmillan & Company, 1911-1936.
13 volumes, 8vo. 20th century half calf gilt, top edges gilt, others uncut (light spotting at page edges).
The updated third edition. The Golden Bough was controversial upon its initial publication for its inclusion of the resurrection of Jesus in its study of comparative religion, as this was considered to be an agonistic reading of Christian doctrine. This section was later placed into a separate appendix in order to mitigate the controversy.
