4to (228 x 172 mm). Woodcut device on title-page. (Paper flaw on M2 affecting letters, some minor staining.) Contemporary limp vellum hand-lettered on spine (portions of vellum torn away lower cover, a few small stains). Provenance: A few notes in a contemporary hand; a few larger pencil markings in margin on a few leaves (many erased).

FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE WORK, in which the author presents a strong indictment against dueling, earning him the praise of the general assembly of the clergy of France held in 1657. VERY RARE: According to online records, we trace only one copy of this work at auction in the last 50 years. Not in Cockle; not in Pardoel; Thimm p.82.
