4to. Color-printed title-page, 23 color-printed plates, numerous in-text illustrations by W. W. Denslow. (Slight marginal chipping to title and plate facing p.44.) Original pictorial cloth [Hanff & Greene's variant B with publisher's imprint in unserifed type printed in red] (hinges starting, slightly shaken and soiled, slight wear to extremities); green quarter morocco folding case.

FIRST EDITION, second state of text, with ads on p. [2] not enclosed in a single-rule box, corrected text, imperfect type in last lines on pp. 100 & 186; colophon printed in 13 lines without a double-ruled box, and the plates facing p. 34 and p. 92 in the second state. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was published on May 17, 1900. It was immediately popular, and within five months of its first publication, the work went into its third printing.
